He has written music and/or lyrics for popular shows such as Godspell, Pippin, The Magic Show, The Baker's Wife, and Rags. He provided the title song for Butterflies are Free, collaborated with Leonard Bernstein on the English texts for Bernstein's Mass and, for children, has written a book, The Perfect Peach, and a one-act musical, The Trip. He received two Grammy Awards
for the Godspell album and the Drama Desk Award for his direction
of Working.
