"An Instant Classic!" - TIME MAGAZINE

February 26, 2004…Burbank, CA…The ColonyTheatre Company, winner of back-to-back Ovation Awards for best play - proudly announces the fifth production of their 2003 – 2004 season, the Los Angeles premiere of THE DRAWER BOY by Michael Healey and directed by David Rose (FUDDY MEERS, BEA[U]TIFUL IN THE EXTREME). THE DRAWER BOY will open on Saturday, April 10th and continue through Sunday, May 9th at the Colony Theatre, 555 North Third Street (at Cypress) in the heart of the Burbank Media Center.

THE DRAWER BOY, the winner of four Dora Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Tony) including Best Play, is about the bonds of friendship and the undeniable power of storytelling. THE DRAWER BOY looks in on the lives of two aging bachelor farmers in 1972 rural Ontario. World War II veterans and lifelong friends, the farmers share a quiet and uneventful life based on stories and routine. Their lives are comically disrupted when a young, energetic actor from the big city shows up on their doorstep wanting to live and work with them as research for a play about farming. As the actor immerses himself, the farmers' darkest secrets become part of the actor's play and the lines between theatre and life, and memory and reality, become blurred. Heartbreak and levity mix in this extraordinary play about storytelling and how it transforms our lives.

Barbara Beckley, Producing Director of the Colony Theatre comments, “Our final production of this remarkable season is a story about the glorious nature of art’s healing power. The themes of this play are quintessentially what we aspire to at the Colony and we are thrilled and delighted that as move towards our next season, we end this one with the message that art and theatre can change lives. We are thrilled to be producing the Los Angeles premiere of this international smash-hit play and our subscribers and audiences are in for a magnificent and moving evening.”

David Rose has directed some of the Colony Theatre’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful productions including its most recent productions of THE NERD, FUDDY MEERS and the world premiere of BEA[U]TIFUL IN THE EXTREME. Other shows include: OUR COUNTRY’S GOOD, (6 Ovation Nominations, Drama-Logue Award), THE FRONT PAGE (L.A. Weekly Award – Revival Production of the Year), YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU (Drama-Logue Award) and PECCADILLO (Drama-Logue Award), among others. He has also directed Justin Tanner’s BIG BEAR, THE LIVING, GENIUSES (Drama-Logue Award) and the long-running cult hit ROAD TO NIRVANA, among many others. He was a founding member of Washington D.C.’s acclaimed Woolly Mammoth ensemble, and served as Artistic Director of the New York Comedy Repertory Ensemble.
