A DEDICATION TO PERMANENCE

Non-profit arts organizations tend to run on a month-by-month or year-to-year basis in a fragile financial condition. Now, in a world beset by both natural and man-made disasters, and with operating costs escalating dangerously, organizations like The Colony Theatre Company face formidable fiscal challenges.

Recognizing these realities, The Colony has launched a drive to generate sufficient funds to ensure its permanence at the cultural center of Burbank.

Permanence means ensuring a strong financial foundation; it means increasing educational outreach to schools and providing new services to community organizations. It also means making long-overdue improvements to the building, such as an electronic marquee, permanent signage, and an upstairs cabaret theatre.

Permanence is best exemplified by granite, so this Campaign to Secure the Future begins with the installation of a Wall of Honor — granite plaques honoring those individuals and businesses that contribute to the project. In addition, The Colony is offering a limited number of Naming Opportunities, so that participating persons and companies will be forever associated in the public’s mind with first-class, professional theatre.

The Colony Theatre Company began its distinguished history of continuous production in 1975. Over the years, it has evolved from a small, local ensemble into a well-established, award-winning, nationally recognized resident company.

In 2000, after 25 years, The Colony moved from its original 99-seat theatre in Silver Lake to a brand-new, 276-seat state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Downtown Burbank. The Colony has since won many honors, including the coveted Ovation Award for Best Play (Larger Theatre) for its productions of The Laramie Project and Toys in the Attic.

The Colony produces plays in all genres: contemporary and classical, comedy and drama, intimate and spectacle, and is well-known for its World and West Coast premieres and ambitious musical presentations. To serve its community, The Colony has partnered with and hosted events for such organizations as the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, John Burroughs, Bellarmine-Jefferson, and Burbank High Schools, Leadership Burbank, Boy Scouts of America, Joslyn Senior Center, Department of Park and Recreation, local children’s theatre groups, the Burbank Chorale, Burbank Senior Artists Colony, Family Service Agency, Burbank Temporary Aid Center, the Boys and Girls Club, and many more. Also, The Colony has participated in The 12 Days of Holiday Cheer, Taste of Burbank, the Downtown Burbank Arts Festival, and has regularly donated tickets and subscriptions to dozens of Burbank schools and charitable organizations, as well as offering classes, special events, and on-the-job training for the city’s youth.

The Colony has been named one of only “25 Notable U.S. Theatre Companies” by the Encyclopedia Britannica Almanac 2003, 2004, and 2005.

And now YOU or YOUR COMPANY can become a Permanent part of this World-Class Theatre!
