Scene: Athens, and a wood
near it.
Time: Midsummer Eve
About Midsummer Night
The title refers
to the eve of June 24th, the Festival of St. John the Baptist, in Elizabethan
days a time of folk dances, pageants, and superstitions. More than any
other night in the year, Midsummer Eve suggested enchantments, witchcraft,
and "summer madness," a state of mind marked by a heightened readiness
to believe in the delusions of the imagination.
