The play takes place in the parlor of Grandie’s house, in a small Connecticut town near Hartford. The time is the present.

ACT I

Scene 1: the day before Thanksgiving, late afternoon.
Scene 2: an hour later.

ACT II

Scene 1: the following day, Thanksgiving, early morning.
Scene 2: four days later, Monday afternoon.

Over the river and through the woods
To Grandmother’s house we go
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted snow
